Client Success Story: Islamic Center of St. Joseph Receives $148,000 Grant for Security Improvements from MO Department of Public Safety

Byrne Pelofsky is proud to announce that our client, The Islamic Center of Greater St. Joseph, received a $148,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Public Safety to address and remedy safety measures within the mosque. In response to escalating violence, theft and threats to area mosques, retired KCMO Detective Edwardo Velasquez, engaged Byrne Pelofsky to write this grant on behalf of the Islamic Center.

The Islamic Center of St. Joseph is the first purpose-built mosque in Northwest Missouri serving a 100-mile expanse of Northern Missouri’s Muslim communities.

“As a Jewish woman, I notice a variety of safety measures are in place when I attend services,” said Lisa Pelofsky, Co-Founder + CEO and chief grant writer for this engagement. “I know that Muslims in this country are also targeted for violence and I am very concerned for their safety. I am deeply saddened by the idea that people in this country are not free to practice their religion without the threat of violence. Securing this award for the Islamic Center of St. Joseph was very important to me.”

The Nonprofit Security Grant program is led by FEMA and aims to provide funding for physical and cyber security enhancements for nonprofit organizations at high risk of terrorist activity.
