Client Success Story: The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Grant

Byrne Pelofsky is now in our seventeenth year writing the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Part A Program grant for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. Our long history with the program and the incredible impact this grant has on people living with HIV in our community make it a special project that we look forward to every year.

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part A is administered by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). These funds provide a comprehensive system of HIV primary medical care, essential support services, and medications for low-income people living with HIV who are uninsured and underserved. The Program funds grants to states, cities/counties, and local community-based organizations to provide care and treatment services to people living with HIV to improve health outcomes and reduce HIV transmission among hard-to-reach populations.

More than half of people living with diagnosed HIV in the United States receive services through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part A each year. Funding from to the City of Kansas City, Missouri is then funneled to HIV case management providers throughout 14 surrounding counties. Local case management providers include Thrive, SAVE Inc., ReStart, KC CARES, The University of Kansas and Truman Medical Center to name a few.

And after seventeen years, our grant writing team has nearly perfected the art of the writing this complex and detail-oriented grant. Working in collaboration with the KCMO Health Department and local case management providers, our applications receive an average score of 96 points with zero weaknesses. We received a perfect score of 100 in 2009 and a 99 in 2020. We have received 7 scores above 95 points.

Our grant writing team is currently laying the groundwork for the FY 2021 Ryan White HIV/AIDS Part A grant – a months-long process that culminates in one of our most rewarding grant-writing projects of the year.
