Congregation Beth Shalom Pours Foundation for New Sanctuary

Jul 25, 2023

Construction is moving forward on Congregation Beth Shalom’s new sacred space – the result of a successful $12,000,000 capital campaign executed in partnership with Byrne Pelofsky.  The new sanctuary is part of a planned addition to the current campus at 143rd and Lamar. The Lamar site was constructed in 2006 and serves primarily as a school. The new sacred space will accommodate up to 500 guests for worship and other celebrations. Architectural design was led by Cambridge, Massachusetts, and internationally-awarded architect, Preston Scott Cohen, who designed the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s Amir Building. Cohen worked in partnership with BNIM, the Kansas City-based firm responsible for iconic local buildings such as the Bloch Building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The new sacred space at Congregation Beth Shalom will feature an artful, undulating, scroll-like exterior with a round façade and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Byrne Pelofsky provided campaign management counsel for this project. The team was led by Jeffrey Byrne and Lisa Pelofsky with support from Barb Bloch, Ellen Kort, and Suzanne Dicken. We congratulate Rabbi David Glickman and Gina Kaiser, Congregation Member and Chair of the Construction Committee, on surpassing their fundraising goal and moving forward with this inspirational project.

Congregation Beth Shalom is aiming for a Spring 2024 opening of the new sacred space.
