Dr. Una Osili Presents Giving USA 2023 Report at Nonprofit Connect 501c Success Series

Jul 25, 2023

Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2022 was presented to a full audience in June 2023 at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. Hosted by Nonprofit Connect and sponsored by Byrne Pelofsky + Associates and Bank of America, the presentation featured Dr. Una Osili, Associate Dean for Research and International Programs at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. Dr. Osili explained that overall giving decreased from 2021 to $499 Billion, despite a mixed economic environment. Giving reached $516 Billion in 2021 and $486 Billion in 2020.  Findings from the report for 2022 showed two-year annualized growth in corporate and foundation giving when adjusted for inflation, but individual giving declined by 13.4%.  Dr. Osili attributed some of this to a 40-year high inflation rate (8%) as well as a drop-off after high levels of pandemic and social justice-related giving over the past two years by individuals.

Giving to religion, health, arts and culture organizations grew whereas giving to education, public-society benefit, environment and animal organizations declined.

Dr. Osili reported there is ample opportunity for nonprofits to focus on individual giving – especially in the arena of socialized giving where $6 Billion was raised in Facebook fundraising alone.  She recommended that nonprofits meet younger donors where they are by engaging with them online. She also encouraged the audience to seek strategies that expand online giving, build a strong pipeline and adapt to new artificial intelligence tools.

The Giving USA Foundation™ was established in 1985 by The Giving Institute. Byrne Pelofsky + Associates is among a few firms in the country to be accepted into the Institute and Co-Founder and CEO, Jeffrey Byrne, Chaired the Giving Institute Board of Directors from 2015-2017. This year’s full report is available online at  Giving USA | A public service initiative of the Giving Institute.
