JB+A Client Partner Leavenworth County Humane Society Gains Conditional Use Permit

Aug 7, 2015

The Lansing City Council unanimously voted on August 6th to approve the Conditional Use Permit to allow Leavenworth County Humane Society (LCHS) to build and operate a “no kill” pet animal shelter in the Lansing Business Center.

LCHS is the only organization working to build and operate a no-kill pet animal shelter to serve all Leavenworth County residents. The organization will offer contracted shelter services to cities who do not currently have their own shelter for intake of strays and relinquished pets. The organization will also offer sheltering services under contract to the unincorporated County, whose animal control authority is the Sheriff’s Department.

JB+A has been selected to do a fundraising feasibility study prior to LCHS beginning a capital campaign. Treanor Architects (Lawrence, Kansas) prepared the site plan, floor plan and elevations for the shelter. LCHS and Leavenworth-native Treanor architect Will Robarge visited with Shor-Line of Kansas City, Kansas, to begin selection of kenneling, cages and other shelter equipment.  Based on current average shelter construction costs, the building and furnishings are estimated at $3.5 Million, for a shelter to house 60 cats and 50 dogs.
